Rodney D. Strong was born in 1927 in Camas, Washington, and grew up to a talented athlete and professional ballet dancer. In 1959 he envisioned Sonoma County as a special place for producing wine. Going forward with this vision, he became a true pioneer in Sonoma County, leading the way for the future of Sonoma County winemaking. His creation, Rodney Strong Vineyards, was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry.

Today, the winery has been led by the Klein family since 1989. Rodney Strong Vineyards and Winery have been assessed and verified under the Sustainable Winegrowing Practices workbook. This statewide certification program provides third party verification of a winery’s commitment to continuous improvement in the adoption and implementation of sustainable winegrowing practices. In 2004, they received the top achievement in the area of sustainability with the Sustainable Winegrowing Green Medal Leadership Award, which is the highest sustainable certification possible.
