Grüner Veltliner ~ Wine Varietal

Because Austria has the world's strictest wine laws, you are pretty much guaranteed to not get a bad bottle of wine from them. Grüner Veltliner is not only their top white varietal but also their flagship varietal. Because it ripens mid-season and prefers deep "loess" soil it's a perfect match for the climate and terroir of Austria, but it was actually first cultivated around the Roman Empire times in northern Italy (and not that far away from Austria). The wine that it produces is usually light and dry with high acidity and lemon-lime on the nose and palate, but the key characteristic of a Grüner is white pepper. It naturally pairs well with traditional Austrian dishes, but in my opinion it is absolutely the best wine to pair with fried chicken.

The creamy freshness of green pear on the nose also has a hint of lemon peel. The body is light but zesty, easy but bright, fruit-driven but also rather peppery. It is alovely, light offering just made for a sunny evening. - Anne Krebiehl MW
